NEW BEER STORE FOR WEST END
KINGSTON WHIG-STANDARD
Elliot Ferguson

Beer drinkers in the northwest end of Kingston will soon have a shorter trip to get their suds.

The Beer Store is planning to open a new outlet near the intersection of Midland Avenue and Cataraqui Woods Drive adjacent to Wal-Mart.

The new store is to be more than 600 square metres (6,500 square feet).

"It's going to be rather large," said The Beer Store spokesperson Jeff Newton.

The store is to be built on land to be purchased from Wal-Mart.

The location is to be built to serve the growing residential areas of Kingston's west end, Newton said.

If everything comes together properly, the new store is to be open for business in the spring of next year, Newton said "That's probably a reasonable timeline for that," he said.

The store is to be a new self-serve design that has only been tried at new beer store outlets in Brampton and Guelph.

The outlet is also to have a larger container return facility separate from the retail section.

The Beer Store has accepted LCBO beer containers for years and since the 2007 introduction of the Ontario Deposit Return Program, it started accepting wine, spirits and cooler containers larger than 100 millilitres.
