City Council approved the new location, at Dundas and Clarke, which came against the advice of their own planner.

Ron Versteeg pointed out a number of minor variances, as the city wants room for road expansion in the future.

However, Mayor Pat Sobeski says council sided with seeing an empty space filled on Dundas. "The question I guess for council is if we turn this one down, what else goes in there? I think council demonstrated a respect for Mr. Versteeg. He did his job as a planner." "We thought that there were important items beyond the planning."

That is, a 2-3-million dollar investment, according to Lee Greenwood with Canadian Commercial Developments. "The site is in a fantastic location, it's at Dundas and Clarke which is a prime commercial node in the east end of Woodstock. It's a site that's sort of begging for redevelopment."

The new Beer Store will also feature a drive thru, one of only a handful in all of Ontario. Greenwood told council he doesn't at all believe that will make for traffic trouble at that intersection. "It's not like a coffee shop that sometimes has huge queues. This will be 1-2 cars going around, people picking up a 6-pack and want it in their trunk, as opposed to people bringing large volumes and making returns. It's an added convenience factor, but it's not going to change the function of the site."

Before you go running out to your car, the store doesn't expect to begin construction until mid-2013.
