FORMER GARAGE SITE BEING REDEVELOPED
THE SIMCOE REFORMER
Monte Sonnenberg

Plans are afoot to bring a new retailer to the Queensway West.

Tuesday, Charlie Miller, president of Canadian Commercial Development of London, confirmed that he has a tenant lined up for a 30,000-square-foot parcel of land immediately east of Queensway Tire.

The property is the site of a former service garage. A crew with a backhoe moved in on the weekend and began loading contaminated soil into trucks. The garage itself has been reduced to rubble and is also being cleared away. Petro- Can is in charge of the clean up.

Miller would not disclose the name of the potential tenant. CCD has a number of hurdles to clear before it can proceed with construction.

"We will need a variance to the zoning," he said. "If the planning department will support us, it will happen sooner rather than later."

CCD made headlines several years ago when it took charge of the derelict corner at Norfolk Street North and the Queensway West and removed abandoned homes and contaminated soil. Today, the cleaned-up property plays host to a Boston Pizza, a Staples and a Shoppers Drug Mart.

Miller says CCD someday would like to own the entire block from Norfolk Street North west to Elizabeth Road, but added he has no commitments from neighbouring property owners to this effect.
