The owner of a new Shoppers Drug Mart in Sarnia is gearing up for a grand opening Saturday.

"The north end of Sarnia is a great place to be and, with The Rapids Parkway and the development that's been going on, this will be a key place in the community," said pharmacist and owner Marcel Laporte.

The 14,500-square-foot store at Michigan Avenue and Murphy Road opened for business Thursday, with IBM personnel finishing up the installation of register display screens, Laporte said. The store is the first in Canada with the monitors, replacing the smaller "point of sale" screens typically found at Shoppers.

The story has a staff of 42, including some brought over from Laporte's other Shoppers franchise at 260 Indian Rd.

"Some of my best people from the other store are coming in here to hit the ground running," he said.

The outlet features a full service beauty department, expanded food and beverage section, digital photo processing, a Healthy Living nutrition centre for vitamins, dietary supplements and herbal remedies and a pharmacy.

Monthly health and wellness seminars will be held on such topics as life threatening allergies (Nov. 26), colds and flu (Dec. 3), emotional health (Dec. 10), and heartburn and indigestion (Dec. 17).

Laporte, a Belle River native — graduated from the University of Manitoba in 2000 and worked in the Kitchener-Waterloo area before picking up his first Shoppers franchise in Corunna. Laporte also owned a Shoppers in Wallaceburg, but now has just the two Sarnia locations.

Festivities for the grand opening kick off at 8 a.m. on Saturday with prizes and draws throughout the day, Laporte said.
